am I the only one who hates what gen 2 did to lavender town? it was probably my favorite town in gen 1 just because of the music and Fuji then Johto ruined it

No. You ruined it by calming the ghost 3 years ago. It was pretty heavy for Gen 1, so when they revisited it, I imagine they wanted to portray some happy resolution.
It's actually brilliant that the music reflects that over time.

Then why do we need the sylph.scope to see them? It's a nice theory but I never saw anything in the game hinting to that

You guys are ignoring the worst part. The music is good, what's insulting is they took a graveyard and replaced it with a radio tower. Even as a kid I thought that was fucked up.

the silph scope lets you see through / not be affected by their illusions. that's why you don't need the silph scope to interpret enemy trainers' gastlys and haunters, and it's also why you DO need the silph scope to see the wild cubone in the tower.

Nope. You do need it for all the others. Otherwise all the ghastly and haunter appears as ghosts and you can't catch them.

Of course. But I don't know. You seem to imply the pokemon tower and the ghost-type pokemon in it are supposed to be more subtle than what they are while the games are being pretty straightfoward with the setting and the whole town is based around a spooky theme.
Sure the ghosts are being part poison-type but in the same way a lot of pokemon were (and still are) Normal/fly instead of being fly-type atm

this is what got me. While I agree the music in gen 2 is terrific for the town, the mysticism of lavender town was removed for a radio tower. like all of kanto, instead of expanding on the themes of the town, game freak went full "dae remember kanto"

one can debate whether or not gastly and co. are more than just ghost-like animals but there is no debate to be had as far as whether or not they're poison types "on purpose".

being a ghost type doesn't make you a literal ghost any more than being a fire type makes a pokemon a literal flame.

Gen 1 had a lot of creepy pasta type stuff that got eleminated or down played later on. The haunting of cubones mother, bill turning into some kind of brundle-fly mishap, the diary entries on cinnabar island. I miss the less is more sprinkled in spookiness of pokemon.
