I wish it was more strategic. I cant think of many mons that arent just mega turn one. At least with sabeleye you can choose to keep prankster up if you think youll need it, but thats about the only mon i can think of that you dont just mega immediately. If it was going to be a turn one requirement why not just make new mons instead of this jank shit.

From an actual gameplay standpoint I think it's just a shitty gimmick and don't like how it wastes an entire turn.

From a purely aesthetic standpoint my shiny Gengar turning into a giant white eldritch ghost thing will never not be satisfying as hell.

My gripe is that some megas are still underwhelming in battle or compete with other megas for the same niche. With the one mega per battle rule, I'm kinda glad we cut off at 48 megas, because these issues would only get worse.

Only one out of all those youve mentioned have i ever seen consistant non turn one evo and thats gyaradose and thats only they can stat boost sto switch to mold breaker on mega so they can be max stat without getting btfo by moonblast

Good idea, I just wish there were more of them. You're basically pigeonholed into using a mega but because the choices are so few it limits what you can do. Ideally they'd take a dozen shitmon every game and give them megas and over time all of the pokemon that have faded away due to power creep could be viable again.

Drought and Drizzle distributions and nerfs had turned Groudon and Kyogre from "legendaries" into "strong pokemon with a high BST and a good ability." They had to give Groudon and Kyogre back their perma-weather, but if they were buffing Groudon and Kyogre they had to buff Rayquaza as well to keep parity.

The problem with the "make it a real evo" thinking, outside the eviolite problem, is that making it an evo means stopping using the actual mon. If Mega Mawile was a Jawnning or whatever you want to call the evo, you'd stop using Mawile and focus on Jawnning. With the mega, while you're not using the base form anymore, you're still using Mawile and focusing on Mawile.

It was a good idea, but had mediocre execution. Megas were one of the coolest and most useful ideas GF had in a long time but a good portion of those megas went to Pokemon that absolutely did NOT need it, like Mewtwo, Kangaskhan and Metagross, some actively made the Pokemon worse like Steelix and Garchomp, and others were complete wastes like Audino.

It should have been a way to revitalise a lot of forgotten and functionally useless pokemon, which is what happened for a lot of the Megas, but then they also just went overkill on already good and liked mons just to cash in on fanservice, like Lucario, Salamence, Rayquaza, Garchomp, etc. And then of course there's still a few Megas of unpopular/not-good mons that are still trash, like Audino.

What people are saying about a lack of strategy involved with when to Mega Evolve is also fair, although I don't have any suggestions on how to fix that.

Making them regular evolutions would have forced Gamefreak to actually fine-tune the balance amongst them as well.
And if they still wanted to jack off legendaries like Rayquaza and Mewtwo, then they can just EASILY be "reskinned" into primal evolutions, allowing what would now be a unique feature to make those legendaries stand out even more, rather than Primal Kyogre and Groudon just being awkward to categorize.

It gave something new to talk about but I dislike that idea. Temporary evolution is the main thing I dislike in Digimon.
Additionally, the powercreep they introduced is just insane. M-Kangaskhan, M-Metagross, M-Salamence, M-Rayquaza.
I liked that it made some Pokemon more viable (like Mawile) but as I said - it's temporary in-game so I don't give a shit.

There was nothing wrong with cross-gen evos and 4-form evolution lines for shitty Pokemon would be something interesting.

It was pretty good. It was a much better way to have a sort of "ace" in your team than Z-moves. I still find it weird that the XY starters didn't get megas while the gen 1 starters did, though. It's sad that we'll probably never get new ones.

Get rid of them in Gen 8 so they can actually be properly balanced by controlled re-introduction. The thing Gen 7 kind of tried and failed to do.

Ones like Ampharos and the starters can stay. Stuff like the Latis can go by just literally not having the item be available in that region. It's that simple.

I loved what megas did for some Pokemon like Manectric, Pinsir, and Charizard. The latter mostly because it finally salvaged the mess that was the fan-favorite Charizard after 5 whole generations of it being shitty. But things like Mega Salamence were entirely uncalled for. Yeah, sure, flavor for ORAS, but being usable in PvP was such a terrible move on an unrestricted monster like that. At least Mewtwo and the weather trio are restricted by most game modes, including BSS, because despite availability, Gamefreak knows some things in a number based game are imbalanced by having numbers that are too high. Their arbitrary system says that even though Mega Salamence has 700 numbers, they can't ban it because it doesn't break one of their two rules though. It just breaks the rule that such big numbers are meant for pokemon who are only supposed to exist outside of the rules they set up(banned legendaries)

Then they added megas to psuedos and actual legendaries and the idea was bad once it was given to us.

Hopefully they just take on as many megas as they can that it gets bloated and we won't get any more shitty threads like this one.

I think skarmory blissey is still much worse.
Also assuuming all blissey gets is magic bounce it would be op, but the art makes it look like it gets secondary dark type, which would FUCK blissey on fighting moves.

A lot of people here are saying they were a good idea but bad execution, but I would go one step beyond. They don't really add anything new or unique. They and Z Moves are just generic limit breaks in a series that really didn't need them. Nor did Pokemon battles really change that much with their inclusion. By which I mean the mechanic iof mega evolution. Mega Pokemon are, for all intents and purposes, new Pokemon with VERY minor differences, that being only one per team and they enter battle as their original form. The later of which is really only relevant in extremely niche situations. The showcase here are the mega evolutions, which are just extremely powerful Pokemon. But I simply don't see what this added aside from power creep. I know the response to this is "Well the older Pokemon are weaker they need buffs in response to the power creep" but quite frankly, this shouldn't have been a problem in the first place. The power creep in Gen 4 and most prominently in Gen 5 shouldn't have happened. They could instead fix the problem by simply retconning the stats of overpowered Pokemon and take more thought into making Pokemon. Also by not making so many unneeded legendaries.

Interesting. I wonder if a comparison could be made between Pokemon with Mega Evolutions and Legendary/Mythical Pokemon. Seems like the more erratic approach ME takes to make Pokemon more powerful gets more results than the (usually) balanced Legendary Pokemon.

My thing with Z Moves is the paranoia they create with their existence. I'm a very set up oriented player, I love turning the stage against the opponent. But since gen 7, at ANY time, the other guy can break out a sudden nuke or super buff that will instantly turn the tide on EVERYTHING. It's a constant looming cloud on that makes me apprehensive to bring out my big gun.

The idea behind it wasn’t for balancing purposes imo. It was there because there is CLEAR favoritism among the selected species. It was completely based on enhancing designs and making the pool of “best bros” “better bros”.

When people complain that their shitmon didn’t get one, so they hate me has it pisses me off because it’s like... there’s a reason why. Literally nobody liked parasect except you buddy. Fuck off.

I just don’t think it was a stretch to just allow them to change form into mega as a standard Pokemon. They could have still been forced to hold the stone. I just hate having the animation process etc

I'm in different, though they weren't needed.
It did annoy me at first cause I assumed that Pokemon would get mega's now instead of evolutions but I feel like past gen evos aren't a thing anymore anyway.

It could've been good if it was limited to weaker Pokemon and legendaries that are banned from competitive anyway like Rayquaza, Diancie and Mewtwo. It would have buffed them without giving benefits to stuff that's already stronger. Unfortunately, it got used as a marketing tool for fan-favorites and already powerful Pokemon and made them even less of an option for weaker Pokemon since that'd mean giving up something like Mega-Salamence, Mega-Lucario or Mega-Metagross.
tl;dr mega-psuedos, Lucario and Lati@s were the real mistake.

It was never gonna be a popular addition no matter how well it was handled.

Normies don't like the changes to the few pokemon they know and they still compare pokemon to digimon, old fans don't like changes period.

I think they were handled fairly well, aside from giving a bunch of them to pokemon that were already fine or that could've used an evolution in the first place.
