>>36076269I mean they basically said as much that this is what they're doing.
They announce a Gen 1 remake with GO catching mechanics, and then simultaneously announce that they're developing Gen 8 for another year and it will cater to Returning Players and have many new Pokémon.
Longer Dev Time + New Pokemon and content + catering to returning players = Gen 8, following Let's Go which was a remake designed to help Go players and Genwunners get back into the main games, as well as appeal to new players (something that EVERY Pokémon game does, hence why the series is so casual)
>>36076291Most of the time actually. Most notable recent example is Sonic, in which they released Sonic Mania, a purely Classic-style game to appeal to people who just wanted to play Classic Sonic. Paves the way for future 3D Sonic games to stay 3D, both halves of the fanbase get what they want.
In the context of Pokémon, Game Freak has ALWAYS had to cater to the fact that they are designing games that have to appeal to a new Generation of kids who have never played before. Since 1996, Pokémon has been designed to be babby's first RPG. GO has also helped re-affirm their understanding of the phantom Genwunner audience, an audience they've tried to appeal to over the past 4 years, but they didn't know to which extent they should take it.
Now they are going all out. Let's Go marking the start of the split, a game explicitly marketed to newcomers, GO players, and genwuners - while emphasizing that Gen 8 will conversely and uniquely be targeted to the other bulk of the fanbase, the returning players who want to see something new. This would make Gen 8 the first time in all of Pokémon (except MAYBE Gen 2) where they market the games explicitly to appeal to returning players who want something new.
This is quite an exciting prospect for Pokémon fans, unless of course you want to assume GF is lying to your face and Gen 8 will be Let's Go 2, which is absurd, but this is /vp/.
