I say 3 since they tried being different. The side series was a new direction for the stadium type games, there was a whole fucking amusement park that looked fun as hell, and I say it has some of the best future gen teases, especially considering it was really the last gen to do it properly. I'm heavily biased towards early 2000's Nintendo though. Primarily GameCube and GBA so you've got me there.

Just looked into it. With Blue and Misty appearing by the elite four, it seems they scaled down the original Johto to include Kanto for fan service. It worked for me being my first game. Definitely makes you wonder though
