I have never played a Mystery Dungeon game at all. Should I start from the GBA ones or are they shit? Or should I not even bother with the newer ones? Where to start?

Red/Blue Rescue Team is amazing. But you could also start with Explorers of Sky.

Don't bother with Gates to Infinity, but Super is also worth your time.

Anyway, I'd suggest following this order:
Blue/Red -> Sky -> Super

Only play Rescue Team or Explorers of Sky. Rescue Team is just Explorers without the quality of life improvements.
Gates to Infinity doesn't exist and Super is extremely condescending. If you don't mind being treated like a drooling retard and sitting through a 10-hour literal Kindergarten arc you juuuuust might enjoy it.

OP, play them in this order. Skip Gates, it's fucking trash. Super is really wierd, you might not like it even if you enjoy R/BRT and EoS. Also Supers "story" is probably the worst thing I have ever seen in a Pokemon game, it's also very different from the first 2, so don't be discouraged to skip it if you don't enjoy it after a few hours.

Rescue Team is horrible. Worst mechanics, poor, barebones story, annoying partner.
Gates has a good story and characters but poor gameplay and post game content.

Second set of games (Explorers) has slightly better UI, more dungeons to explore, some improvements but its story is bullshit at times. You will probably appreciate it more if you play it after Rescue Team.

The main problem I have with super is that it feels so aimless.
In Rescue Team if felt like you were always progressing towards something. You had to gather supplies for longer missions, get gold to buy friend areas, recruit new pokemon. In Super you basically get everything for free and you are just doing missions to waste time hoping that the next one will progress the story.

the rescue team games are the same with minor differences, same goes for the different explorers games. Just like the main RPG pokemon games.

With that in mind I'd play Blue over Red since its on DS. Only ever played Explorers of Time after that, but everyone in this thread is raving about sky like its something different so idk.

Another good pokemon spin off game to play is Ranger, that was fucking awesome.

Super Mystery Dungeon might be the only game I've dropped without finishing the main campaign story.
All these games are horribly mediocre, but the first couple are fun enough. I'd say start at the first DS one (same game as Red Rescue Team on GBA) and keep going if you enjoy that, but stop after Explorers of the Sky

It's basically to Time/Darkness what Emerald is to Ruby/Sapphire: a third version. It literally has everything EoT/D do plus a lot more new content. So quality aside (even though most people here agree it's at least good), there is no reason to pick T/D over it.
