Personally I just collect the old stuff, i.e. 1999-2006 (or the Original, Neo, and EX-series).
I don't collect the new shit because of all the fucking reprints (most sets nowadays have at least THREE different versions of each Ultra Rare (Regular Ultra, Full art, rainbow rare).
Try to start with a particular set, or type of card.
