Not to say it doesn't have weaknesses, but look at Super.
There's huge wasted chunks of the story just because the writers couldn't figure out a smooth transition.
Many of the characters were dropped from Super from one moment to the next. GtI keeps developing them until the end.
Break system again.
The way mons are recruited imply that, strictly speaking, far too many missions are very much completely prefabricated. You know you're going to hit at least one monster house when you try to go for specific mons.
On the other hand, GtI handles characters with grace. Even if there's problems with the text scroll speed, and some of the NPC animations carry on for far too long in town.
