Am OP. I think there's a multitude of things happening right now, but I'm just some guy.

In my baseless opinion, I think Game Freak is probably trying to make good games, but doesn't know whether they're selling to casuals or long-time fans. They're constantly walking that line, making decisions that wind up frustrating fans at both ends. But at the same time, they're also afraid of expanding their team and not having total control of such a successful franchise.

I think after seeing the success of Pokémon GO, they're beginning to trust the power of the franchise in fresh hands. That said, I think they're expanding. They're working on the Let's Go titles in tandum with the 2019 "all-new-region" game. That's pretty unprecedented for Game Freak's small team, as far back as I remember.

So, as far as these are concerned, between Let's Go and the 2019 entries, I suppose they're trying to figure out what they're supposed to be doing to please their huge fanbase without alienating any buyers.

It could have the best Battle Frontier ever, but if the region is still an empty unfinished series of corridors and the main story is still a sequence of interruptions and cutscenes that feel like an unending tutorial that doesn't just hold your hand, it superglues them to a rotom screen, then I won't even care. Fuck drudging through another Alola, even if the postgame/online are good.
For a lot of people on the fanbase I'm sure that a sequence of underwhelming garbage games could make them lower their standards and get pleasantly surprised by even the bare minimum, but for me it's the opposite effect, as SM/USUM have burned me so bad they killed the franchise for me harder than TLJ killed Star Wars. I'm not interested in Pokemon games anymore thanks to gen 7, and for them to bring me back they'd have to make a game for the ages, it'd have to be that good.

My problem with the newer games isn't that they're too easy, although better boss fights and a longer campaign would be very welcome. It's that the presentation is just so bad. They (probably) have a few good artists working for them, so why can't GF realize their work into a beautiful product? SM managed to make Hawaii into a bland stroll. I know they struggle with programming, but I wish they'd ask for help or something. It doesn't have to look realistic or have a complex lighting system, it just has to have a decent, unified aesthetic. I know this is subjective, but would anyone describe XY or SM as beautiful?

I do also wish they felt more free to experiment with the battle system, both in how it appears and the technical aspects. Stuff like obscure evolution methods can be retconned too. It's odd which things they cut and which things seem sacrosanct.

The 3DS was dogshit man, 2 years obsolete by the time it launched, 4 by the time GF launched their first game on it. They reused the 3DS engine for LG and it honestly looks far better, if the base hardware had been better, there wouldn't be as much problems with how the games ran or looked. I keep saying it, but I think GF will sit a lot of people on their asses with Gen VIII now I know they're taking their sweet time getting it made to maximise their familiarity with the hardware.

I really did not like gen 7, at all. However, i think Alola DID look beautiful, it was just the fact it was reduced to almost rail shooter quality, and everything was just a hallway esque path. Felt like a theme park or an amusement ride, not a fully explorable country.

Modem GF doesn’t know what fans really want:
- Lots of new Pokémon in the new dex
- Little or no Kanto pandering (Pokémon included)
- No stupid gimmicks like Megas of z moves

I think the key words people are missing are

"not an entry game"

So this really sounds like it wont be a typical brand new gen but rather a sequel. Also the way they say its a game for long time fans really sounds like Kanto revisit, just not a remake in GO style like LGPE

You know what I would love to have? Move slots.
You can change your moves any time outside of battle (or perhaps just in a Pokecenter/town?) picking any you have unlocked for that Pokemon.
So you can try a move and if you dislike it, just pop it out easily.

You can even follow that up with actually training Moves, rather than getting them by level. Expand TMs more and make teaching a TM an actual mechanic rather than a 5 second process

If they actually bother to try improving the core gameplay with OW encounters over RNG ones and Odyssey style open exploration then maybe I'll believe him.

If it's just Sun/Moon but in HD and more new Pokemon then no.
