did someone at game freak fall asleep at the wheel or what? why did remake games from 2 years prior look like an entire gen ahead of the mainline games?

heartgold definitely has animated sprites during battle I dont remember if the other two did they were that forgettable desu

You may not like gen 5, it does have its bad, but you cannot outright say they didn't try. The only times I can accept they didn't try as hard was with oras and sm/usum.

Part of that is that they weren't trying to pander to graphicfags yet.

Gen 4 and 5 were still technically 2D in the "2.5D" style, they just didn't take it to an extreme in HG/SS.

With Gen 5 they started the trend of making the graphics really important though - to the detriment of the games because there's zero point in doing that if you aren't going to do exploration and, more importantly, to allow the player to have control of the camera (which even the DS could actually do -games did it - and hell, even allowing a 90 degree angle change at a time would've been something - they were just too lazy or incompetent or both to do it right).

It's the stylized versus realistic thing. Stylized holds up and realistic doesn't. Gen 5 tried to be more realistic and failed in multiple ways for it.
