Dogasu said it was better than movie 20. Here's some details though

Beef with humans over their greed, 50 years ago people caused a forest fire while attempting to smoke it out for its rarity. So it went berserk during a similar disaster (and after dealing with other poachers) and Ash stepped in to to calm it down. Pikachu is Ash's only pokemon seen in the whole movie, so he's the only option when it comes to battling.

The anime's always been more about showing off the Pokemon's personalities and powers more than actually battling

Sun & Moon's different format just gave them an opportunity to get rid of the shonen elements almost entirely and go full kodomo

Because they want to recreate the whole spirit of adventure aspect missing from the anime/movies. It became increasingly more focused on gym battles and battling meta, that people lost sight of the the fact it's suppose to be about an journey with your partner in a grand adventure.

The battling is a big part of a Pokemon adventure, as much as exploring new places.
