Let's have a thread about emulating.

Question, do you reckon emulating is better than buying the console/game?

Emulating advantages:
>It's free
>You can have much higher quality graphics
>You can play on a much higher quality display
>You can save states and all sorts of other magic goodness

Console advantages:
>You can play/trade with other people much more easily
>You can play X/Y which can't be emulated right now

I have a MacBook Pro which is hardly very powerful (it's only got integrated graphics) and it runs Pokemon Sun on Citra just fine.

i'm still for owning the console though. just something about the tactile sensation of the buttons and touchscreen makes playing feel infinitely more natural. no stuttering, either.

my DS really came in handy a few days ago when i was waiting for my letter to get signed. would've probably drained my phone just browsing for hours

A PC is used for more things than just emulating, so that doesn't work.
It's like saying nothing at all is free because you need to pay for electricity to use it, or for water to maintain your body to do other things. Retarded logic.

I mean, I run it fine with an i5 6600k and a 970 from 2015, the current equivalent on pc parts is super cheap, slap a 1060, a cheap i5k, 8gb of ram and you are good to go.

anyways any decent 2016 pc onwards should be able to emulate easily unless you are one of those faggots who spend 2 bucks on their computer and bitch computers are slow and sluggish.

I have been using MelonDS to play gen IV games as it is the only emulator I know that allows trade between two games running on two instances of the emulator. My autism won't let me use modified ROMs that change trade evolutions and add more wild pokémon to routes.

But fuck out of every 10 trades, I'd say only 2 are succesful and the other 8 give me the blue screen error. Any suggestions?

Anyway, the team who made Citra are currently building a Switch emulator. I've not tried it but still, it exists.

Hello friend, I also have used MelonDS for trading. And yes, sometimes the trades fail. But sometimes they work, and like you say, it's the only emulator (that I'm aware of) that supports trading.

But I use DeSmuME for general playing (when I don't need to trade) because it runs much better. I found a tool that converts the save file from a raw format (which MelonDS uses) to DeSmuME's format, and back again. I think this is where I got it from: https://gbatemp.net/threads/nds-save-converter-v2-6-alpha.306224/

So yeah, if you don't already, I would recommend using DeSmuME for general playing, and just using MelonDS for trading.

Yeah, Desmume runs much better indeed. And you can use the GBA slot which enables pal park and some other features in DPPt. I know desmume uses .DSV save files and MelonDS uses .SAV but I never really needed to use a save converter because desmume itself has an export savefile option that converts the .DSV to .SAV

Also, do you have a shitty PC? I haven't been able to get my GPU to work this past week, and trading using the motherboard's integrated graphics causes way more errors.

Never noticed that, guess I need to look for it.

I've got a MacBook Pro which only has onboard graphics. I'd say trading on MelonDS works maybe 50% of the time.

There was a recent canary update to citra that allows you to allocate far more to the GPU.
I went from about 20 fps to a solid 60. It may be worth trying the canary line, if you haven't.

What do you mean by R4? Is that another emulator? Anyway, like I say, I had to use a converter to convert DSV to raw SAV files, otherwise MelonDS wouldn't recognise them.
