What does Lurantis gain from pretending to be bugs? I know why real orchids do it, but how does that translate for Lurantis who is not even in the Bug egg-group?

Game Freak is lazy and thought people wouldn't want another Bug/Grass, so they gave us another generic Grass type instead.

Sure but the whole idea of disguising yourself as something else that's scary is to protect yourself from predators but in Pokemon Grass and Bug have a lot of overlap in weaknesses and presumably thus predators so it's not that great of a defense.

By disguising itself as a bug type, it appears less threatening to the types that a grass type hunts: water, ground, and rock
This is a clever inversion of the real life flower mantis, whose mimicry confuses the bugs it hunts into thinking that it is a harmless plant

that's not how it works. they eat berries and smaller pokemon. type is a game mechanic

Yes but it plays a role in hunting.
I'll reword it. In terms of smaller pokemon, would the Pokemon Lurantis hunts even be water, rock or ground type?

don't think so. bonsly and diglet are the only pokemon of those types, and the pokedex says nothing about them.

fomantis Pokedex says that "it sleeps in the ground and soaks up light", Lurantis and fomantis have "plant form" so i supose they eat just like a plant, also canonically all pokemon eat berries.

Bug types are probably the most common predator of grass types. It seeks to avoid being eaten by it's most common predator by pretending to be one of them.
