Actually fucking this though. I'm replaying Crystal and wow, largely top notch sprite work. A few shitters here and there, but easily 90-95% are of exceptional quality.

Hey man, Platinum has great sprites and the charachter design is on point. Probably because it was the last game Ken Sugimori designed characters for. The 4 Rocket admins in HGSS are the beginning of someone else.

Gen 3 has the WORST sprites. They're all either off-kilter or super boring.
Say what you will about gen 5's janky animations, the still image sprites still look decent.
I never noticed how ugly the sprites were in Emerald when I was younger, but now that I have the eye for detail, it really stands out.

Emerald is at least slightly better than FRLG/RS and the animations are decent. I agree regarding gen 5's sprites but battles look like a mess thanks to the awful tweening.

Gen 3 is literally filled with terrible sprites. Either mis-coloured sprites or one's with fucked up anatomy and proportions.

My issues with it are

>crest is splayed backwards instead of out, giving it a weird head shape

Not to mention it sucked in DP because it didn't get Bullet Punch or Superpower until Pt.
HGSS is peak Scizor.

the gen 3 sprite is very smooth with dark segments sliding perfectly into place

Why were there so many awful back sprites that only showed a tiny part of the pokemon up until gen 5? The spaceworld demo showed that at one point they were trying to have the back sprites show the whole pokemon, so why did they change their minds?

problem with these sprites is the outlines are too dark and aren't broken up by intermediate colours, giving the pokemon a flat look
