never played a pokémon game except for pokémon stadium which i enjoy quite a bit. should i even bother getting into the franchise at this point? if so where do i start?

They're all the same game, you only need one or two tops to get the gist of it. I'm partial to the GBA titles myself but HeartGold and SoulSilver are probably where you want to start.

Pokemon games aren't very good. I didn't play Red until I turned 21 and found it to be incredibly mediocre. I was around 7 when these games were initially released but never played them or the card game at the peak of their popularity. I don't think there are any people JUST getting into Pokemon that aren't children and the older people that are still playing it were into it when they were younger.

Most of the best games in the series are the versions released after the initial gen starters and the remakes except for ORAS. Modern Pokemon games are garbage and the spin offs are mostly pretty well done.

>Heart Gold / Soul Silver
>Black/White
>Black/White 2

The Volt black and blaze White mods are the absolute best the series has other offer and it's not even made by GameFreak, just a very difficult mod with great changes to the core gameplay.

Black and White have the best soundtracks.

Don't bother with the first two gens at all, they're just too old and limited and unpolished. Try FireRed or LeafGreen, if you like it play Emerald, if you like it play HeartGold or SoulSilver, if you like it play Platinum. Then if you still haven't played enough Pokemon try the newer ones, but be prepared that they'll progressively be worse.
