Just a different climax, the Looker episode, the Zygarde hunt and some Island Scan mons. All in all, SM is generally inferior to USUM in terms of gameplay.

The story in Sun is less of a mess, but Ultra has more features so I'd go with it. Playing 1 also makes the other difficult to play since GameFreak prioritized story(not a very good one) over replay value and the first three islands are nearly identical in both.

They’re 90% the same game. USUM is slightly better. Best USUM addition in my opinion is Mantine Surf + Move Tutors. Makes a lot more Pokémon usable, especially Lycanroc.

debating between getting a 2DS XL for Pokémon or a Switch for future-proofing when Gen 8 drops. i'd like to get both but i'm not swimming in cash right now. which one should i buy first?

Just some story differences between the 2, and of course you get Necrozma and the cover legendary in Ultra.Between better Pokemon selection and some other features, I would say play Ultra if you had to pick 1. I would also say just stick to 1. Alola is not really worth playing multiple times if you can avoid it.

You think crazy squid Lusamine (as a trainer) beats boosted dragon Necrozma? As long as you don't cheese the Necrozma battle with some stupid strategy like Inkay or Zoaroak, I think it's a pretty good challenge
