>>36105790Here's the thing, while I don't necessarily think Sugimori is as talented as some people think, I also don't really think it's his fault he receives as much praise as he does. That's generally an audience and exposure thing. I think if Nishida had the sheer amount of exposure Sugimori has had and we'd known her name since day one like we did his and had concrete art to associate her with, I expect she would have gotten a lot of praise too. But instead, we're in the timeline where Sugimori is the art director and main character designer for everything Pokemon.
Instead of hating him for not being creative, I think we should probably be:
A.) Criticizing Satoshi Tajiri for giving him such an important and all-encompassing role in the series. He did the same thing with Masuda and he started out as just the composer for the games, but somehow Tajiri thought he'd be a competent director. Funny how things work out.
B.) Working to raise Nishida's profile.
I hate to say it, but generally positivity tends to resonate better than negativity in most cases. Attempting to tear Sugimori down to build Nishida up will just likely cause people to look at the situation with contempt as opposed to understanding.
In many ways, this is Stan Lee vs. Jack Kirby legacy all over again and people tried to tear Lee down over Kirby not receiving royalties and for the most part it backfired. People were sympathetic, but there was also a strong defense of Lee from people who thought he was being unnecessarily impugned by people with questionable motives that were more interested in destroying Lee's legacy than doing right by Kirby.
