Honestly I do feel like Pokemon is a franchise that has long been playing "keep away" from its 90s roots. Baseball caps and schoolyard bullies, arguing with girls and aiming to be the best, that's what it was about back then and it really lost sight of that.
While every pokemon game is generally better than the one prior, that hint of "heart" has been missing for a while. The TV series covers it best.
Ash was originally a scruffy mischievous little punk who needed to learn the world didn't revolve around him, THAT's the 90s man.
With franchises like Stranger Things bringing back family adventures from the 80s, Pokemon is the perfect franchise to use to bring back coming of age stories of the 90s.
Now the adventures we simply imagined as kids can be realized for the kids of today.
