I'm aware GF are a bunch of hacks, but they have always made smaller jumps when it comes to the first game duo on a new system, so I really don't expect anything much more than SM HD until we get gen9, since so far we have always gotten " the last released pokemon game in HD/3D( when the 3D jump happened)" whenever they bring pokemon to the current new console. We didn't get the jump from chibis and top down to full 3d and models until gen7, whereas most people probably expected X and Y to have made that jump already
At the end of the day, whatever GF are, it's them who decide what they want pokemon games to look like graphically, and the futureproof 3d pokemon models suggest it's not going to stray from the current style too much
