Showdown is nice as you can just generate the pokemon you want to use, without having to invest time into breeding and training, but you have to abide to Smogon rules, which are so and so.
I reccomend trying the battle spot a bit, just to see what others use, and maybe pick up some strategy - hopefully not just Sheer Cold Suicune though.
Other than that, try planning a team, with strong pokemon that you like. Typical roles to fill are physical attacker, special attacker, physical wall, special wall, stealth rock setter and cleric.
