What do you have to do to unlock the wifi courses now? Can a hacked 3DS backup regular DS cart save, & then copy a modified save BACK to the real DS cart? I was hoping there would be a way to manually enable the walking paths that way.

Technically speaking? No, because you need Sinnoh to complete the dex anyway, so you can take Pokéwalker shit from DPPl when you do the rest.

That said, it gives you a nicer variety of Pokémon early on, tons of useful items, Munchlax is easier to capture in there, and there are some fun events (like flying and surfing Pikachu, though they're hard to get, I was never able) that you can unlock with a rom that gives away events.

I got mine from a guy with a flashcard and one of those roms that gave away events. A homebrewed 3DS also can have an app that inserts events in the DS games, like the wifi routes for HGSS or the Oak's letter etc in DPPL.

everything else just gets you some hard to find items and pokes, but nothing truly exclusive to the pokewalker aside from some underleveled evolved mons

Most of those were wifi events though. Good thinking for the event carts though. I had no idea there were DS roms of event carts that give away pokewalker events.

I have a pokewalker laying around somewhere that someone gave me, I don't own a DS or HGSS. Can I play with it alone? Is it fun? I used to love those Pocket Pokemon Pikachu & Color Pokemon Pikachu 2 semi-virtual pet things they released for Gen1 and 2 and liked them, wasn't this meant to be a successor?

Nah, it's pretty useless without a physical copy of hg/ss. A bootleg rom won't work either. It uses the special mystery gift IR sensor if I recall, s that won't be on a fake cart.
