Pokemon's potential

No.36118032 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
So, I've heard about this for a long time, but what exactly is it? Usually it means that people think Pokemon can be more than it is, but why do we think that? Is it a comparison to other RPGs? That can't be right, because Pokemon started out as being more simplistic than other RPGs. Okay, so maybe they just needed to get their feet wet. Pokemon continued to be lesser than other RPGs. Pokemon wasn't even created as a story vehicle. It's just catching, collecting, and battling monsters. Story is the only thing that RPGs have going to make them interesting, otherwise, they would be just like Pokemon and just mashing a button to win. (unless they also add more complex elements to the battle) What interesting thing could possibly be done to make catching, collecting, and battling monsters more enjoyable? It sounds to me more like something that should be a TCG rather than an RPG.

Most people seem to think Pokemon can be this grand epic. I don't understand where they get this idea. Is it from the anime? If so, then they should be told that nothing in the anime makes sense at all. There's nothing in the games, because nothing interesting happens at all in the games. The closest you get is BW and BW2, but even that is somewhat forced. Not even that is mostly what I've seen from fans. They seem to think that Pokemon is some happy camping trip. There is nothing that conveys this idea in the slightest. It plainly is not what Pokemon is about.

So please tell me what this "potential" is, because I otherwise see nothing.
