Grunts don't really do much. They appear here and there, fight you and run away in a blink of an eye. A lot of the times, you don't even know what they are doing in places you meet them at. The only big encounter before the climax is in Driftveil.
Zinzolin is pretty much a comedy relief villain because of his constant complaining and frequency of battles (you fight him 3-4 times within 2 hours). This is disappointing, considering he is the only guy (besides Shadows Triad) who is not a simple grunt. You automatically assume he's supposed to be important but he seems incompetent.
Colress is not that interesting when you think about it. His reasoning for joining evil team is just plain dumb and the game doesn't expand on his character. Another disappointment.
Shadow Triad are basically magicians. It is never explained how are they able to stun you in the sequels.
The biggest mistake was made at the end though. GameFreak, for some insane reason, put pleasant beach town and told you to battle a gym leader in the middle of the climax. You are given NO good reason why that is. Hugh only says something like "we will get DNA Splicers for sure so just focus on getting the badge"... what?
I like the fact that gym leaders once again appear outside of their gyms and old characters are neatly handled, however the evil plot is just straight up mediocre for Pokemon standards.
