He's got a strong character arc for Pokemon, and he's very good at being a rival because you sort of want to be a friend with the awkward nerd but also sort of want to punch his awkward nerd face in. His battles have easily visible but neat gimmicks to them, and he was more challenging than Cheren and Bianca.

As an antagonist his motivations were both understandable and believable, which automatically outclasses the drooling retards from Hoenn and Saturday morning cartoon villains like Lysandre.

That moment where you get to his room and everything about what he is just clicks is the crowning moment of the franchise's writing. Which then sets up a really hard gut-punch come B2/W2.
