Hey /vp/reons, what're your favourite (non-Pokémon) monster raising/collecting/whatever franchises?
What do you think it does better than Pokémon?
Is there anything you think Pokémon does better in?

Fossil Fighters for me. I liked the first two games slightly more than Pokemon, I think, but it's a dead series now most likely.

i love Digimon but I feel like it'd be better if there was some consistency between their games.

It'd make digi lines easier for casuals to wrap their heads around if they had just a few digivolutions for each Rookie/Champion. Even evolving/digivolving to raise ability to meet requirements for digivolutions you actually want is a pain.

Personally I'm a big fan of the fact that Digimon is willing to try new things and experiment.
Plus almost everything is their own self contained story so you aren't as likely to be blindsided by some lore from a completely different part of the franchise or entry that is over a decade old.

Too bad every game changes the mechanics completely. Also Digimon has never once been about skill it's always who has the most powerful Digimon which is usually one and if you don't play the game to get that one you're doing it wrong.
Do they not see that the only Digimon game that made any impact was DW1, they should just keep remaking it instead of this survival-strategy RPG experimental bullshit.

Wasn't DW1 the one closest one to a survival game, I'm pretty sure it's the only one where food can be an issue in the early game.
Also I'm very wary of "remake game one", considering how much /vp/ is currently on fire at the moment because of a new game set in Kanto.

I sort of love Digimon and sort of hate it at the same time. The monster designs are cool and some of the anime (Adventure, Tamers, and Savers) is great. But the games always range from slightly disappointing at best to completely fucking unplayable at worst and the rest of the anime is awful. I just played through Cyber Sleuth last month because digifags suck its dick all day long in digimon threads in /v/ and it's actually fucking awful for the most part.

Aside from that, Medarot, SMT, and Monster Rancher are pretty good. I never got as into them as I did with Pokemon and Digimon, though.

Put your analytical glasses on. It isn't great. The story has its ups and downs, but the gameplay is really boring. Combat is slow and mindless and the dungeons are mostly plain-looking collections of floating blue platforms. There's also very few of them and the side missions force you to visit them too many times. The only interesting ones are the Digital Shifts and those are exactly the ones that you almost never revisit. The exp system is completely broken too. The +exp abilities and equipment are completely unbalanced, but the grind is ridiculous without them. The way you increase your digimons' stats through evolution and dgeneration is an actual step back from previous Digimon Story games and is completely unrewarding. It's just not good by any standards.
