Let's say Gen 8 continues Gen 7's "totally not gym's" formula. What would you like to see in place of gyms and trials?

Tests
Like 6 tests correlated to stats 1 “Head/Leader” per stat. One will have max iv|ev trained Speed mons ...etc
Then maybe 1 Random strong boss/head examiner between every 2 tests

Waypoints. The region is divided into 8 parts, with 5 waypoints each. You have to reach and activate at least 3 of the 5 in all 8 parts of the region to advance to the Pokemon League.

Some waypoints are simply isolated and hard to get to. Some are patrolled by trainers, others involve puzzles, and some are located in the control of the antagonistic team.

I thought this might be a good way to incorporate open world mechanics into a Pokemon game.

Merge Gyms and trials.
When you enter a gym, you can't leave until you win or faint.

Each one has it's own challenge.
From a simple start of beat 2 trainers.
To beat 5 trainers without having a pokemon faint.

Stuff like that.
Maybe some gyms will start with your pokemon getting a toxic status effect on you, timed puzzles, that sort of shit.

Have each gym leaders pokemon team generated when you enter the gym to counter yours so you have to battle skillfully instead of just grinding+strong move. Or auto scale their pokemon to be so many levels above yours depending on the gym, for the same effect.

That's actually a good idea, it would keep it challenging and make it a different experience for each player/team. Maybe have their team shift between different pokemon of a few specific types though, to maintain a theme for each leader.

Oh my god, yes. Having your fire type Pokemon using fire attacks in the water to create steam and then using your flying type Pokemon to send the steam in the opponent's direction so that you can use focus punch without being interrupted. That's all I want.

Gyms. Whatever gets added instead of trials is inevitably going to be a replacement for gyms (like trials were) so I'd rather be spared whatever imitation GF come up with and see gyms come back.

I'd prefer just gyms but if that wasn't an option than I'd definitely go with zelda style dungeons.

This, honestly. I want my RPG back. If Gayfreak is gonna focus on plot, at least raise the stakes and give me 8 dungeons where I have to battle through hordes of enemies, solve puzzles, and then defeat a real boss to get to a 1/8 shard of the McGuffin I need to save the world/ whatever.

How about 8 new UBs that act as dungeon keepers/ bosses. Upon defeat, you gain access to them via an optional post dungeon where you can rematch the UB to eventually capture it. I liked the idea of boss Pokémon. The feral, beefed up totems. Expand on THAT, if you must get rid of gyms.

Pokemon tournament.

Basically, you enroll in the tournament and participate in different stages in different cities. As you reach higher stages, the opponents become stronger, naturally. You lose and you need to start over in that city (realistically you should be disqualified and you'd have to start from the beginning in the following season, but that'd be incredibly tedious).

All stages include battling, at least 3-4 battles. But they also include other challenges.

There are gyms and gym leaders, but leaders are pro's. Just below the E4, all of them. You can challenge them once you win the tournament. Then you can go face the E4 and champion
