So what are your thoughts on these batch of designs and the concept of "alternate forms" going forward?

because even Let's Go is including these guys despite not being rigidly tied to Gen 1

I appreciate that Alolan Golem feels more cohesively tied to its pre-evos with the growing magnetic and compact hands themes, although I find it bizarre that it still just ditches Graveller's second pair of arms. They may as well have left them out of Alolan Graveller's design.

These are the most garbage ones though. Not even faticate is that bad. The only good one are Rainbow Road Muk, Marowak, and Exeggutor.

Raichu, Sandshrew-line and Vulpix-line are good but their originals were already well liked

Even if I didn't like some design (Alolan Persian and raticate), I liked the idea and hope we will see more in gen 8 but for other pokemon than gen 1 one.
Also Alolan Sandshrew is the cutest pokemon.

Between regional variants and megas, the former is a clear winner. Regional variants can be modelled in a way that fits new region and GameFreak can create some interesting stuff (as evident with Sandslash and Ninetales). Most importantly, they are permanent unlike temporary megas.
Despite all of this, I still prefer cross-gen evolutions. There are many Pokemon who would benefit from them.

As for my opinion about Alolan forms themselves:
Great - Sandslash, Golem
Good - Ninetales, Marowak
Okay - Raticate, Muk, Raichu
Bad - Persian, Exeggutor, Dugtrio
