Festival Plaza was a poor imitation of Join Avenue, but I loved Join Avenue so much that even a bootleg was easy to get invested in.
And anon, I don't think Pokemon games even need more than the skeleton of a story, but I liked this one's. It engaged me despite feeling somewhat rushed. Hell, one of the games I really liked on 3DS was The Legend of Legacy, and despite that being a "poor man's SaGa," to me the absolute lack of immediate story improved the game and made me feel like I was exploring somewhere that no one had explored before. I like both games that are full of story and games that have so little story that they're not even enjoyed by fans of a series like SaGa.
The only real complaints I had were the constant prompting (i.e. c'mon, over here, etc.) that served no real purpose, and the weak dungeon design.
