Magnemite are only capable of absorbing so much iron via this method as their electricity and magnetism both are fairly weak. This is exactly why they evolve into what is essentially three Magnemite who have calibrated their voltage to perfectly match each others'.
Magnezone evolve in areas with high iron content due to the excess iron piling up around and within them, alloying into an UFO shaped mech that each of the original three Magnemite are permanently housed within.
The central red eye is not one of the original Magnemite but instead is more like a single lensed goggle allowing the third Magnemite housed in the rear of the UFO to scan, observe, and aim better than the other two.
Nobody has been able to pinpoint which of the three Magnemite becomes the "pilot."
