ignoring the Raichu fetish,

what's the obsession (I see this often in general) with having each starter type?

Feels like an easy way to miss out on a lot of the other types, and Grass/Fire/Water isn't even any special kind of coverage together

Grass/fire/water is one of the best coverage cores in the game. Most VGC and Smogon teams are built around that core.

Plus you generally want a water type for surf/water is just a good type in general, so if you pick one of the other starters you're already 2/3 of the way there

I don't know about VGC but most teams in OU are actually built around a Steel/Dragon/Fairy core due to Fire generally being better as coverage.
