Not bad, actually, reminds me of how they portrayed Hyrule from Zelda 1 in Zelda 2, as just a small piece of an overall bigger map.

Still, this would make Kanto a VERY big city for Gen2 standards, like, what were you supposed to do inside all those buildings? Fill them with useless NPCs?

Condensing Kanto into a single large city could have been interesting, but this was kind of a shit attempt. So many landmarks are gone. No path between rows of trees to represent Viridian forest or a small fenced road to represent the cycling road.. Not to mention the water routes being blocked and Cinnabar being totally absent.

I makes sense when you look at old art for Kanto. Instead of it being like RL Kanto, being ~1/3 of the mainland Japan, Pokemon’s Kanto is just the Tokyo Bay Area.... which is why all of Kanto became just Tokyo in early Gen2.

Iwata made localization possible because English text takes up more space than Jap text. He had absolutely nothing to do with putting Kanto in the game.

This was in development when Pokémon came out in the United States. I think a laege contributer to the scrapping of the original Gold and Silver concept was down to it becoming apparent that Pokémon would be a globel phenomenon that could be profitable for many years to come, prompting them to realise they shouldn't waste the entire country this soon.
