So, every bit of footage from this game shows the boy character with Pikachu and the girl character with Eevee. Are the genders locked to each game, or has it been confirmed otherwise?

Why would they require you to bring certain types of levels of Pokemon to challenge a gym?
Why would they remove battling with wild Pokemon?
Why would they not include a day/night cycle?
