Johto was treated differently than new gens are today. It was meant solely to capitalize off Pokemania and extend what everyone loved about Red and Green/Blue.

It was, quite literally, Pokémon 2 in the beginning. GF saw the love everyone gave the 151 OG Pokemon and wanted to continue capitalizing off of those ones. That’s why most trainers use Kanto mons and they’re more commonly wild Pokémon, rather than the new ones. Which was another selling point. 100 new Pokémon who are tough to find.

It’s the same reason why Brock and Misty were still in the anime, as compared to today where we get new characters for each Gen. Every aspect of Pokémon was iconic so everything in Gen 2 was meant to stay consistent off of Gen 1.

Ruby and Sapphire is where the franchise really started to evolve into what it is today, with Hoenn being filled with mostly new Pokémon, and an even amount of Johto and Kanto.

Let's be honest here, Johto is the worse generation about mons design. Johtofags are almost like Genwunners, but hipsters.

Johto had some really good designs for pokemon, it's just that many of the pokemon from johto were terrible to use in the games, weather they had a shitty movepool, poor stats, or a combination of both.

They're basically genwunners that actually play the franchise.

Other than that, I somewhat agree. The region and everything is too interconnected to Kanto, it never gets to "stand on its own" if that makes sense. Being the smallest region aside from Alola or Orre doesn't help either

They were being lazy and riding off the initial popularity of the franchise. This is evident in the small Gen 2 pokedex and the fact they used rejected Gen 1 designs.

gen 2 was basically an expansion pack for gen 1. The new pokemon were supposed to be newly found, rare species. It was also supposed to be the end of the series, but they saw it was making too much money to put an end to it, so here we are now.

johto lowkey sucks ass but /vp/ has such a boner for it because a lot of members are in the 20-25 age range. I mean I get it, it was my first game too but come on:

The main thing Gen 2 and HGSS has going for it is the extended campain/post game

Other than that, it's basically what you described. If RSE or DPPt had another region to campaign through, they'd be remembered better.

Some johto mons may be bad like ledian and dunsparce.

but the ones that are good are some of the best designed and coolest

heracross, scizor, houndoom, ampharos, lanturn, ursaring, typhlosion >>> charizard, skarmory, kingdra, tyranitar

it's a shame more trainers don't use actual good johto pokes...

>bag system the games STILL use

>move info
>exp bar
>trainer rematches
>two new types
What did RSE add that wasn't there before?

>double battles
>secret bases
and that's pretty much it. Not to mention they didn't have a day/night time cycle or backwards compatibility.

What I loved about Red/Blue/Green was that the Pokedex wasn't almost entirely composed of Baby Pokemon or Pokemon with garbage stats.

Gen 2 had nice music going for it and the town/route art were a step up, but that's about all it had going in its favor. Its pretty telling, when people mistake shit like Skarmory and Slugma as Gen 3 pokemon.
