the strat for singles if you actually care about getting far is consistent +6 setup rather than pure offense, which can lead to some stallfests but mostly guarantees you can't lose to an unlucky matchup, which is what a lot of "3 fast attacker mon" teams end up quickly losing to (though they're fine for just getting to 50)
top super singles teams cripple the opposing lead (intimidate, entrainment durant, etc) and have a defensive core that can let you switch stall the AI's moves if necessary (gliscor/suicune, aegislash/chansey). i personally use garchomp/suicune/mega scizor because i like my battles not to take 30 turns each, and it's gotten to around 150
doubles is a lot different because you don't have much room for setup or stall so you pretty much just want the hardest hitters right out the gate. trick room, terrains, and rain strats work very well. the current highest streak super doubles team (2180) uses lele and mega sharpedo of all things but it's surprisingly effective
if you're serious about winning, there are many places you can look to find the rosters and movesets of every single trainer in the tree so that you can plan your choices accordingly. the smogon battle tree forum thread in particular has a lot of nice resources
