I'm playing "difficult" fangames after only playing Showdown for like a year and I have no idea what mons are good in single player.
More suggestions please.

It's NU It's not necessarily BAD in higher tiers, 110/110 attack speed with flying STAB is nothing to scoff at, but it's hard outclassed by e.g Staraptor or Swellow; there's just no reason to use Dodrio if those two birds are still in the tier.

I'm playing red + + for the first time. I've gotten too used to the difficulty in Pokemon which is to say nothing at all. So I got kicked in the balls when I got to Pewter gym and found out Brock was carrying three fully evolved fossilmons. Got to Cerulean and was greeted with a Vaporeon that's carrying Aurora beam that will one shot Ivysaur. Yeah I think I'm going to visit Vermillion first and round out my team. Gym leaders are dangerous in this game.

Right, Dodrio is objectively worse than Staraptor, but it's only a little bit worse; you could sub out Staraptor for a Dodrio in RU and still have a reasonable team.

And Staraptor is arguably one of the best birds in casual, which still makes Dodrio really fucking good.

Man, it's not really fair to compare other normal/flying types to Staraptor.
Fucker got everything a offensive flying type would want. Reckless, brave bird, double edge, u-turn, roost, close combat.

But Dodrio, as far as normal/flying types go is really solid. At 110 base speed and attack, it will either outspeed or hit harder than most others.

The lack of decent STAB leveling up (or in general) is one of the things that kills mons for in-game the hardest. It's not hard enough that it's a shitmon, you also have to run slash or strength on it to have some worth, which is saying a lot.

For me, the biggest issue is how instead of knowing typings and general movesets, you're required to memorize opponent's level up moves or straight up gamble, because a single level can turn CAN'T TOUCH THIS into OHKO, so it's disqualified from ever being OP in single player.

Steelix is actually broken in-game. It pretty much cannot lose against enemies that use physical attack (i.e. most of them). I especially love evolving an early game Onix immediately by using a Metal Coat from another save file and then completely walling all the Normal- and Flying-type basic shitmons.

Also this. One of the best Pokemon I've used in-game across all generations. Stamina is such a great ability.

And then in competitive it resides in the lowest tiers because it's physical movepool sucks, has severe 4MoveSlotSyndrome, and no reliable recovery

Pretty much all of those are stuff like Hoenn Bagon and Deino, stuff that's so late that you can't really use them. Kangaskhan's also pretty worthless without its mega, and you're not getting that ingame

This applies to basically 90-99% of attackers. It even applies to special attackers since the swords dance is superfluous. Even Sunkern can sweep if you pass two swords dances, three speed boosts, and a substitute to it.

Kangaskhan isn't bad though. It's reasonably fast and bulky with 105/80/80 defenses and 90 speed. Attack isn't impressive, and neither is offense normal typing, but I wouldn't call it bad.

Not gonna lie I usually write off normal types in general, not having STAB SE attacks is a pretty big downside to me and it's why almost every flying type is something i overlook. Seriously, fuck normal/flying

Normal types get access to Return though. A stab-boosted Return is as powerful as a lot of super effective coverage moves. Flying is basically in the same boat, hitting lots of things for heavy Neutral damage.

In single player the difficulty is low enough that you can basically just switch freely and hit things with super effective moves at will though, so there's not really any strategy to facilitate relying on neutral damage.

I think the only one i've really used was Miltank/Cinccino. Miltank's got Milk Drink to top off your team's HP and it's deceptively fast and Cinccino's entire learnset is basically 125BP with an absurd chance of having at least one hit crit

27 of them, counting mega pideot.
Also bare in mind, swablu and fletchling lines lose their normal typings and the togepi line was retconned into fairy.

It didn't in my experience. Hail damage is pretty minimal as is, and in-game isn't a war of attrition like competitive can be.
Chip damage doesn't matter much when npc pokemon don't even have EVs

arcanine is my favourite pokemon ever and can basically carry your team through gen 2 if you can find a fire stone but it's extremely mediocre in competitive, I always keep extremespeed on it ingame even though it's so fast compared to NPC teams that it's basically pointless but signature priority moves are so great

Crawdaunt was surprisingly legit in ORAS. Hyper Cutter is still really nice and it's got a constant stream of godly STAB moves.

A lot of Electric types are mediocre, but in Kanto and Hoenn where there's a million Water and Flying types, even the worst will pull you through, like Electrode or Minun, both of which I have used.

Literally only because it was one of the few Pokemon that was allowed to have Intimidate. Pair that with Will-O-Wisp and Roar and you get a decent Pokemon when playing around rules.
