He's not wrong. Pokemon is one of the strongest franchises, so people get normalized to the idea of an everyday dedication to Pokemon, which doesn't have to be the case and definitely isn't the case with the vast majority of franchises.

That's bs. I remember places thriving with Pokemon talk during the days of gen 4 on a regular basis, gen 5 started to die down with half the community complaining about the Pokemon designs and things. Gen 6 picked things up a bit with the first introduction to 3D mainline games, but once when ORAS came around discussion about the games dies off within about a month. No, I don't count places like youtube as a place for "discussion" because you're lucky to have the same person respond in the same comment stream for more than a few times.

But it has been with Pokémon until now. It wasn't until the very tail end of B2/W2 and OR/AS that you'd have trouble finding a battle on Battle Spot (or a WT partner in Gen 5).

Gen 7 has had that trouble since about 3 months in.

There is clearly a stark difference. And I don't just mean on this side either. I'm most often awake during the Japanese hours which should scare the shit out of them that I can't find a match.

Try weeks. SM content everywhere got awful numbers after less than a month, and USUM never got good numbers at all, community engagement with these games is very very low. I don't blame anyone, just thinking about booting up USUM and going online in that godawful Festival Plaza and I immediately give up on the idea.
He's right that people are enjoying other things instead though, mainline Pokemon is as dead as it can be.

Being a fan of something doesn't mean you have to live, breathe, eat, and shit it (in this case, Pokemon) 24/7. It's fine to skip a couple games. It's fine to not collect merch. The list goes on. You're still a fan as long as Pokemon interests you. By entension, it's fine to have a few down times between gens; it's not the end of the world. Pokemon and its community(ies) won't be dead for a while.

That is wrong on so many levels. Every gen since then had successful video game, anime, TCG, and other merchandise runs. The latest Pokemon games are among the most selling games for the systems they come out on.

Would you say Star Wars was dead from 2005 to 2015, or that DC was dead from 2012 to 2017?

Oh well then, at least I'll be a fool that's having fun. What a lot of you guys are experiencing are withdrawal symptoms. If you don't have Pokemon flowing through your veins all the time, you lose it. I've been a casual for a while now, so I'm not experiencing any of that. I don't assume it's the end of the world during a short dry spell. I just play something else for a while and check back in every now and then. Easy.

I'm curious...why do you like pokemon? Why do you believe gen 8 can be good? There is nothing that I know of that could possibly do that for anybody unless they were brain dead. The battles were never good, exploration doesn't matter, there is no immersion, there is not an engaging plot. Why?

Because I went casual pretty early on. I never went full-on hardcore, play/buy-every-single-game, collect-all-merch for Pokemon, so I have neither experienced burn out before nor do I experience withdrawal from a lack of Pokemon. Instead, I skipped some gens, emulated, skipped out on merch (never been a huge merch guy anyway), etc. Therefore, gen 8 could hypothetically be shit, but it won't have that big of an effect on me. I never thought it's going to be perfect, though, and that's fine; I've never played a Pokemon game that's even close to perfect

Things that existed are not a fantasy by default however.
