This game ruined the rest of the series for me. I swear that after playing this, I just can't play any of the other games. There's something so polished about it, it just makes the rest of the series feel rushed and half assed. I can't even play soul silver anymore.

Black and white especially feel almost like fan made games after the greatness of HG

I really liked BW2.
But HGSS is the definitive Pokemon experience.

I wish you could hack it to have unlimited TM usages though, and a way to buy coins at the game corner.

Gen. II is trash and HG/SS did little to change my mind on them.

9/63 of the new Pokemon are only in Kanto
6/63 are only through trading.
6/63 are only 1% chance unless you get a phonecall
3/63 are only available through headbutting, which was a pain in the ass
2/63 needed stones, which were a pain to get
4/63 evolved through happiness, which was a chore if they weren't caught in Friend Balls (and two of those are eevee, who CAN'T be caught in a friend ball)
3/63 are roamers who appear whenever they fucking feel like it
1/63 WAS in Johto, but was only catchable after going to Kanto
1/63 was an event (we didn't get)
So that's more than half the dex which is either hard, awkward, or just generally annoying to get, and most of them are shit, or not worth using.

My biggest regret is having not bought this game when it was new. At the time my "friends" were making fun of me for liking pokemon and kept saying I was childish, it made me very self conscious and I decided I was done and skipped HGSS. That phase didn't last to long because I went to another school and met some great new friends who didn't judge me and I got a copy of White Version to play with them. Now those games are really expensive :(

I enjoyed HG and SS, but honestly the lack of variety with wild Pokemon made it incredibly boring. Some of the music was a bit overcomposed too.

It may be the best Pokémon game overall, but it’s not perfect by any means. There are legitimate issues with HGSS even if they are, more or less, the definitive Pokémon game. Each game since it has been better in some way or another, even if they were not as good overall.

In my opinion, it was pretty cool having all these new and unique ways to encounter and evolve Pokemon. Their distribution also increased play time when trying to catch them all, and you had to explore the entirety of both regions.

But hey, the glory days had to end at some point. Hopefully you enjoy all the handholding and brevity of the last few regions.

There are far better ways to increase playtime than by giving many Pokemon shitty distribution. What you call fun many others call tedium.

This. And hell, nothing wrong with making some Pokémon harder to get. But they chose the WRONG Pokémon to make harder to get. New Gen II mons, especially some of the more underpowered ones, are not the kind of Pokémon to limit. Larvitar, for example - no big deal. It’s a pseudo-legend line. But shit like Misdreavus, Sneasel, Murkrow, Houndour, etc. should have been available in Johto. And not having evolutionary stones in the main game is bullshit. Johto distribution is shit.

I found grinding to evolve some Pokemon in BW tedious so I didn't do it- I deposited a Pokemon on the GTS to trade. Similar to the Johto Pokemon you didn't like, I didn't care for the unova Pokemon. But if memory serves, there were no prerequisites for trading Pokemon over from Sinnoh to HGSS, you could pick and trade from over 490 Pokemon. Your argument would be much more valid if discussing the original GS.

But Murkrow, Larvitar, and Misdreavus can be caught at the safari zone. It took me a bit of effort but I included a Pupitar on my Elite Four run which became Tyranitar sometime in Kanto. I'll give you Houndour, though. The safari zone also adds a few new options in some kanto mons. Overall, Johto's not Kalos as far as distribution goes, but Johto gets way too much shit about distribution.

It wasn't that great. The level curve is still fucked; even though Kanto was improved, it's still mostly a bunch of nothing; rematches are a pain in the ass, I should be able to do all of them whenever I want; the Safari Zone did little to fix the second gen poke availability problem; you still have to rely on HM slaves; apparently, TMs are only for use on what you want to be serious with; and there is still an unreasonable grind to the end of the postgame.
