So I started Ultra Moon on my 3DS XL and noticed it takes about upwards of 5 seconds of black screen on startup and about 3 seconds of black screen after each battle to load the environment. Thought it was just me but I looked into it and they did it to push the system to its limits, so it's less noticeable on the N3DS/XL.

Is this a huge factor into why people don't like these games? I've finished and adored to some extent all previous official games, but with this constant delay my will to continue is rapidly dwindling (I just finished the first trial).

The kicker is that the environments suck and all look the exact same: barren, pixelated, and boring!

Hours of cutscenes also help it to be boring; it was fine in SM, but people expected less of them in ultra and got more

Yes, you're in for a bad loading time boy, SM/USUM run really bad on the regular 3DS, just to list a few problems
>It will load slowly
>it will take a while to load the home menu after pressing the home button
>it will soft reset your console when closing the game
>it will have frame drops in 2vs2
>it will have some frame drops in some moves/effects

most of this can be fixed by playing on a new 3DS

The games have much bigger flaws, what you mentioned is just icing on the cake, but it certainly doesn't make the games any more bearable. My biggest problem with Alola was the huge focus on storytelling they had. Pokemon is most fun when it's your adventure before anyone else, and so dedicating so much of the game to these other characters and their adventure is really not too engaging.
Along with that there's the copious forced tutorials which just waste your time and the lack of many memorable battles

I've had this while playing on a n3dsxl too. It also lags in the ultra warp ride and poni mantine surfing spot.

Yeah no way I'm getting a N3DS unless I win one from an arcade or something. Always thought it was stupidly inserted as the next step, especially with the name they decided to go with.

You know, I didn't mind the cutscenes on my first run of Sun, but they really messed up in not allowing them to be skippable. Hurts replayability a lot, and a huge portion of the Ultra game is replay.

that's weird, i didn't have any problems with the warp ride and i don't really remember having frame drops with the surfing minigame

I played both games on a 2DS and totem fights lags like shit along with 2vs2

I actually enjoyed my first playthrough of moon, but boy it was rough when i played USUM
The only part of the story that i didn't like was those stupid cutscenes with lillie after she changed her clothes, boy those were a real waste of time
