What even are Fairy types? What are they meant to represent? I'm looking through the fairy type Pokemon and I can't discern any sort of overarching theme to it, other than 95% of them being Totally Kawaii Uguu~™.
I get that the fairy type was created solely due to Dragons being overpowered at the time, but why Fairies? And why the Pokemon they chose to change?

Mawile tricks things with it's mouths, and Gardevoir and Primarina are performers who put on an act, and Klefki steals keys.

That's probably why they made it the strength against dragons too - their power itself is deceptive because they look girly and cute, in general. You wouldn't expect them to take on a dragon but they can.

This is just my guess though. I've always been pretty big on such mythology in general and even looked further into them both at the time of announcement and there's nothing as far as I can tell that directly links them and that's my best guess.

A running theme they have is the weaponization of things commonly thought as completely harmless.

Aromatisse uses perfume and makeup, Slurpuff is a cream filled puff pastry, Ribombee throws balls of pollen around, Klefki jangles keys as a threat, etc.

As for those who have been changed there's Mawile who uses unassuming cuteness to lure in prey, several are literal fairies like Clefable and Togekiss, and both sides of the Ralts line are not only rooted in the concepts of daintiness and chivalry but are also tsukomogami of umbrellas.

Then there's Granbull. Halfway between a pitbull and a boxer might seem un-fairy to anyone who've ever met a good dog of one of either breed. They're two of the sweetest loving dogs who usually forget how strong they are when attempting to love back.

It's a type that captured some of the vague (Maybe it's normal, maybe it's psychic, but it isn't really either)

No shit though, it's the meta type, just like Dark before it. Fairy and Dark make no fucking sense, but they fulfill a balance role. Unlike Dark, GF forgot to balance it.

Like how Dark has Pokémon who are dark because EVIIIIIIIL or those who are more actual darkness. Like Murkrow is associated with the night and dark magic, while T-Tar is agressive, because it's a GODDAMN KAIJU.
