In BW there's an "event" in which a character of the same sex as the protagonist has a crush with you in the ferris wheel (so if you pick Hilbert, you meet a gay man, if you pick Hilda, you, meet a lesbo. Not joking).
In XY (regardless the version or the protagonist you choose) a character from Ambrette Town (or Cyllage City, I don't remember) mentions how a few years ago his friend fell in love in Unova's ferris wheel, referencing this event from BW, so what happened in canon is that the protagonist is Hilbert and he meet a man in the wheel.

I think the only game that never mentions other protagonist at least once is Hoenn games because it happens at the beginning of the timeline (same time as Kanto games), so nobody knows about Red yet and the other protags aren't even trainers yet

Trying to justify canon protag choices is a foolish endeavor and Gamefreak will never have one aside from Red. In fact, I can prove this claim with the BW2 cut Tournament data:

It always bugged me that they didn't give you a chance to meet and fight the protag of BW in BW2, like Red in Gen2
They could've just made it Hilda if you played as Rosa and Hilbert if you played as the other guy. Or they could've had it as some event from doing that memory link thing
