Adult themes is just dark and edgy for the sake of it and doing anything for it's own sake is always retardation, be it change or edge.
You can do deeper dives into human existence in a story without doing "adult themes". In fact it's completely possible to do it without even changing the rating of the game if the ones writing and animating etc. it is competent enough.
