yes. That's actually the reason. I want to have a rival that I want to punch in the face, because he's an ass. I want to have a reason not just to beat him in a fair pokemon battle, but to utterly crush him.
A win feels a thousand times better when it's against someone you hate.

Sure, a friendly rival was refreshing when G3 came out. But shit, it's been 4 straight gens of friendly rivals and the only rival CLOSE to being an edgy asshole is Gladion.

I don't understand all the hate towards likable rivals. Blue didn't have a personality at all, and silver was only good because of his character development into a real person. I mean, yeah, they can get annoying, but at least they have some sort of motivation that doesn't rely on the main character, and aren't there just to be a punching bag with angry eyes glued on.

The problem is they aren't likable, they're the same face over and over that don't truly develop. They start out super nice to you and at the end of the game they stay the same, just with stronger Pokemon, the only exception being Bianca, which you can argue isn't your true rival.

Just that I can think of off the top of my head, Wally gains confidence in himself, eventually leaving his family to try to become champion, and gains a bond with his Pokemon, and hau learns that he can't just be as good as his father, he needs to step up and become someone his Pokemon can be proud of, while being something of a foil to gladion, who has to learn to trust others, and to choose quality over quantity when it comes to allies.

blue has a distinct albeit 2d personality in gen 1, and is given more dimensions and allowed to "mature" in gsc while retaining his "smell ya later!" core.

he actually has a distinct arc through all the games culminating in being a hilarious dude who is good friends with red, just like they were when they were kids before blue turned into a douchebag.

I actually wish they would someday subvert the typical friendly rival. Have him/her start out super friendly as usual but become more frustrated and upset with each loss you give them, till they become the classic jerk for the duration of midgame.

In red/blue, his "distinct personality" wasn't 2D, it was 1D and gimicky at best, certainly not fleshed out enough to be considered a character. As for later games, he does develop nicely.
