I think people overlook him just because he isn't the final boss of the main story like every other champion. He's definitely among the best of them despite that.

He doesn't do anything noteworthy really, but I do think he has the most important thing about him than the other champions. He is pretty much the epitome of why I hate the trainer plot, but could also be a reason for some to seek another reason for becoming Champion. To me, it doesn't matter, since being the Champion in itself is still meaningless.

I feel like Alder is a good character, but not a good champion. He doesn't really contribute meaningfully aside from facing N at the 11th hour, just saying that he'll be prepared for it. The bit with his chat with Cheren after Nimbasa is more a Cheren moment than anything Alder related and he only slightly contributes in finding the Dark/Light stone, which kind of resolves itself.

I wish we got more of a glimpse into his attachment to his first pokemon that died and how it affected him. We've only really seen him after he's moved on.

Yeah, people knock Gen 1 Gym leaders/Elite 4 (and some of gen 4) for using pokemon outside their type. But in reality it helps prevent the player form just using one pokemon to sweep.

The difference in those games is that it's obviously as a result of them not having the foresight to have enough Pokémon of each type for each type specialist. It's actually less pronounced in Gen 1 than Gen 4, though, because the Gen 1 teams are generally at least fairly thematic, whereas Gen 4 has shit like Volkner with Ambipom and Flint with Lopunny and Steelix, none of which make a lick of sense.

Unovas design is somewhat based on NY. Locations, story, and characters are not.

It's as if Game Freak was finally getting the hang of the "cool Champion who nonetheless relates to the player" idea in the one game where they weren't really doing that. Definitely a fun character, and that he would be the bug-type champion to boot is a great touch.

Great personality and encounter theme. He isn't prideful and tries to make others understand different points of view. I really appreciate this approach and it's one of the reasons I love BW. Route 5 encounter (where Cheren and Alder talk about Pokemon) is especially one of the most memorable Pokemon cutscenes to me.

As a champion he is underwhelming though. His theme is one of the worst and his team is just 'okay' (being semi-specialist is awesome but the Pokemon choices are meh).

Overall, the best champion after Lance.

Gamefreak's comments about the national dex during Gen 5 practically say that Unova is a different country from Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh.
Not being in PokeJapan is also probably why the routes got reset.

Also every region uses yen pointing to it being just a more french, hawaiian, and ny version of pokejapan.
Although unova is much more japanese than kalos or alola.
