I had no idea how base stats worked, I thought Pokémon stats went up by a certain amount each level determine by what species it is. Sounds similar in practice, but particularly it made me think that
1. Delaying evolution would result in lower stats, since that would be fewer levels with the higher stat gains from an evolution, and
2. Stats could never go down (i.e. evolving Shelgon into Flygon couldn't possibly make his defense go down - stats go up every level!)

I thought "Sea Mauville" is just the name of the Abandoned Ship.

I never realized that it isn't actually a remake/rename of the ship but a new thing altogether (a sunken research facility)

I thought running from a legendary pokemon would prevent it from despawning. Luckily, I did this on the fairies in platinum, who reappear after you win the game. I also used to think legendaries were impossible to catch without using one specific type of ball on them.

The large amount of bug/flying types made me think bug was weak to ice. Using ice beam on a Nincada and dealing super effective damage didn't help set me straight.

I used to think vitamins and Super Training in Gen 6 just raised your stats directly so you could take a Pokémon that has shit attack for example and basically just max its attack.

I only realized there was no physical/special split in gen 1-3 when gen 4 came out and people were talking about it. To me, Hyper Beam had always been special, Waterfall had always been physical, etc.

That explained why my gen 3 Azumarill did shit damage with waterfall but a lot more with double-edge

yeah but considering the spaceworld prototype somewhat uniquely was actually going to NERF several previously final form pokemon that got evolutions (spaceworld seadra, for example, ate serious shit and i'm extremely thankful they changed their mind on this plan) it wouldn't be the equivalent of the slowbro we know today packing eviolite.

Same. Thanks my first pokemon games being Stadium and Stadium 2, the more observable move animations made me I assume that any projectile attack was already counted as special.

I did the same with Rayquaza when Emerald was released. My Lairon knocked it out with Rollout, so I saved and tried exiting then re-entering the tower expecting Rayquaza to respawn. Boy, was I stupid. I guess I didn't know this would happen because the earliest handheld pokemon game I played was Crystal and I never bothered to catch legendaries during that playthrough.

I thought the marking pokemon feature was there so in case you released a pokemon, you could run run into the same one catch it again (and be able to tell it was pokemon you had released)

Before watching the anime or playing the games I got an sticker album (in wich the pokemon werent in order), and I thought that ditto evolved in grimer, venonat evolved in butterfree, metapod in scyther and then into kabutops, and that gastly evolved in cloyster and then into lapras. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

When I first played pokémon I didn't know Pikachu evolved with a thunder stone, so I leveled it up to 90 something trying to evolve it
turns out it held a light ball that I didn't know about, so after I finally did evolve Pikachu it ended up worse
