Gen 4 was the peak, it’s all downhill from here unless gen 8 manages:

It could be really good. I don't think it'll be BotW good, but likely as good as the most enjoyable games in the Pokemon franchise.

Gen 6 work-time was concurrently spent making futureproof models for each Pokemon.
Gen 7 work-time was concurrently spent making custom animations for each Pokemon.

What could take away from their work for the 2019 game in a similar vein?

the fact that halfassed 6 and 7 sold just as good as usual, no reason to put more effort into it if the bare minimum is enough
