I know the anime is never consistent but you could really tell here, especially with pikachu weakening charizard, giant suriken, and both having a type advantage, that Ash was supposed to win the league match.
At least that's the way it was written. Maybe I'm wrong or maybe it was changed last minute but either way looking objectively at the battle Ash won that match.
It's just more believable that the writers weren't allowed to let Ash win than charizard being OP and not going down "just because"
I'm not too salty about it because of this. I'm more upset that the fight with sceptile was significantly better and I wonder why they let it outshine the final league fight
