it's satisfying
I just walk from place to place and beat everything up. No explicit grind, I just fight all the trainers on the route and avoid running from wild fights unless I'm feeling really lazy.
Anything that I'd need to grind for (read: literally just Blue and Red, because I'm always dramatically underleveled for both), I just cheese with revives and status moves. Shit, I'll do that a lot even if I'm around the right level.

>save before choosing a starter>go to mr pokemon's house>go back to elm's>go to the city again to buy balls>go catch two pokemon>hand a ball to your starter and one of the other pokemon you caught>clone those two>pick the other starter>go back to town>leave the non-starter pokemon in your party, clone both starters>and then finally fucking get the last starterwhen I was a kid, I was really dumb and did it the extra long way, where I only caught one pokemon each time and ran up to mr. pokemon's house each time
and it still pisses me off slightly that I'll still be missing their dex entries even though they're in my party
