With the spear in most videogames you have range + fast thrust attacks, which is pretty different by using a sword for thrusts (the rapier range is smaller and using a 2 handed sword for thrust isn't the fastest thing ever).

Actually with a spear you can have a different moveset, with different angles (and ways) of thrusting, using the pole of the spear instead of the point, and have a lot of range while still being fast.
