Why has pikachu's design drastically changed so much over twenty years? Am I blinded by nostalgia or is the newer design not as 'cute'?

Why would they slightly alter their mascot?

Oldchu had a similar body shape to Clefairy. They changed it to make its silhouette more distinct since it's the mascot.

There's no other Pokemon that has a body shape quite like Pikachu's.

I think it looks very odd though. The bizarre jawline-neck area just makes Pikachu look like a snowman of three circles.
