About to start Ultra Sun, it's my first pokemon game since BW2, my first on the 3DS, and first with two new gens and fairy type,.

What am I in for? Will this be a whole new adventure or a soulless experience?

It’s not bad, just underwhelming. Cutscenes take too much time and the map designs are weak. If you only care about battling, the endgame content is meh.

Story is worse in USUM, and there's way too many NPC pointless 'sidequest' cutscenes that you can't get out of. There's more pokemon and legendaries to get though.

Everyone here shits on it because they expected a Black/White 2 situation. It's not a continuation of the story in Sun/Moon, it's S/M in a different universe. Meaning things are similar but not exactly the same. That being said; it's a lot better than Sun and Moon. Pokemon selection is great, battles are harder, there are more sidequests, and areas that were empty in S/M are now filled with something. Also you can catch every legendary if you're into that. Cutscenes are still a thing but if you can look past that I think you'll have fun.

BW and BW2 were some of my favorite games of the entire series, spending the $$ to get a 3DS for any of the latest games hasn't seemed worth it up til now.

There are an excessive amount of pointless cutscenes. Playing through it can be quite a chore at times.

It’s really handy and convenient in others ways though.

The problem I have with story and long cutscenes is it breaks up the "immersion." and I know, "muh immersion," but part of the point of the games is to explore the region with an avatar character while putting together a unique and specific team of mons. Forcing you into interactions is really annoying.

Compared to BW2, USUM is utter garbage. It’s nothing but soulless cutscenes and walking linear routes from point A to point B with little to no exploration in-bewteen, immense hand-holding and handouts, and almost zero substantial post-game.

SM has better story and climax, USUM has better Pokemon variety.
That's it mostly, they didn't improve postgame much, there's a fanfiction tier 2 hour episode and then an awful minigame to hunt legendaries.

I was in the same boat as you anon, the games are good, but not as good as gen 5. Gen 5 has a good balance of story/gameplay these games are a lot more story focused
