A mega would have been the perfect opportunity, maybe even an alolan variant.
Poor guy out of himself, Gengar, Golem and Alakazam is the only Gen 1 trade evo who didn't get a Mega OR an Alolan form.

Megas won't save anything anymore. We've already reached the point where a ton of them are banned from UU and yet never used in OU. Megas are terrible for buffing since you can only have 1 per team, so everyone focuses on the handful of good ones, with maybe some lesser used ones popping in and out briefly depending on how the meta evolves month to month.

Conk has Drain Punch so it has recovery over it. It also has Mach Punch over Machamp. No Guard got an indirect nerf since Confusion got nerfed. I don't see it every surpassing Conk without a new ability or meme mechanic like fusion or some other wack shit.

Megas only work if it’s really good. With the number of fighting megas alone, competition is already stiff. I’d rather they shift/boost stats, change movepools and abilities instead that will give Machamp a separate niche from Conkeldurr

This is all move tutors fault. Conk having better stats, fighting priority and drain punch would be pretty balanced with Machamp having worse stats and all the elemental punches/knock off. Blame B2W2, before that they were more evenly matched.
